HONOR DOMESTIC WORK hihdomesticemployers MELINDA ALEXANDER mumumansion “I deeply appreciate you!” For ten years you have lived with my mother Melinda, your grandmother. You grew up with her devotion to you, with her modeling for me and for you what lifetime caregiving looks like. As you became a teen she set out to show you that life is adventure, taking you as companion—from Mexico to Norway. When Mom began to need help, you were there for her and, as time passed, you became her primary family caregiver. While Lupe took the day shift as paid caregiver (see tribute to her on mumumansion), you have been there from 6pm to 11am—out of love and generosity of spirit. As your grandmother is living her 100th year, everyday you bring her love and light.
Together, we both work with Hand in Hand hihdomesticemployers and cadomesticworkers—striving to raise awareness that everyone’s home is also a workplace, for family caregivers and paid domestic workers alike. As you have cared for your grandmother, you have joined the international women’s movement to make the invisible labor of the home visible and to fight for equity and dignity for domestic workers. My tribute to Lupe and your tribute to me, and many others stories about life in the struggle to care for loved ones while fighting for government-funded Longterm services and supports, are on the website: www://honordomesticwork.com domesticworkers caringacrossgen #dignityhealth #honordomesticwork

Yesterday hihdomesticemployers launched #HonorDomesticWork and I’m moved to honor my mother, levasiaidereh 💕

My mom worked as a house cleaner when we first arrived to the U.S. in the late 80s. As undocumented immigrants who did not speak English, this was the only work she could find. She cleaned houses during the day, and at night we all (my two siblings, dad and me) helped clean offices. After a very difficult battle with cancer 4 years into our time here, she gave the work up because it would have been too strenuous of work to return to. Shortly after her recovery, my grandmother - her mother - was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and my mother became her caretaker. Caring for her even while she continued to work during the day.

Her care continued after the death of my grandmother in a multitude of ways. From caring for aging friends to welcoming into our home friends and family, who like us, chose to leave their lives in Peru behind in search of more economic and physical security in the U.S. Eventually, working in two residential living facilities for the aging, before dropping everything to come to NYC and help with childcare for my little one so that I could finish my Masters program, and now as I am back to working full-time.

I have learned immensely about care (and love) from her, both from her work as a former domestic worker and as a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother and care giver.

I deeply appreciate the care and love she pours into the kiddo, into all of us.

You too can honor a paid or unpaid care giver in your life by visiting: www.honordomesticwork.com and sharing your story. You’ll receive this beautiful poster (pic of it in slide 2) by Bay Area artist micahbazant for FREE (I gifted it to my mama). Join me in participating in this beautiful and inspiring project. ❤️

Veralucia honors their father for all the ways he supports them:

I am deeply thankful for my dad, a Black immigrant engineer from Peru who moved to the United States to provide me with opportunities he never had available to him. For years he has tended to me, even bringing me homemade lunch daily through the pandemic, because I have Lupus and other chronic illnesses that cause fatigue and pain. When he suddenly developed macular holes in both eyes, I was more than willing and happy to step up to be his chauffeur, secretary, and advocate. The love between us makes this work and the darker moments a little lighter. I am happy to say after 4 surgeries, he is healing well! I am so grateful for his support.

Hannah Guilford honors the families, friends and neighbors in her community for the care they provide by filling the #Childcare gaps:

I work in childcare access and want to honor all of the family members, friends, and neighbors in my small, rural community that fill the gaps in our childcare system that is failing both caretakers and families. They devote the finite resources of their time and their energy to care for other children on top (and sometimes at the expense) of caring for their own. The economy of our community could not exist without their work, but they are often made invisible by their class, race, ethnicity, and language. Our community relies on them, and I thank them for the sacrifices they make to do this work.

Stacy Kono honors her mother, Grace Kono:

My mom has been a caring and patient caregiver to my dad as he's navigated a Parkinson's diagnosis earlier this year. While my sisters and I support them both, my mom gives the most time and attention to making sure my dad drinks water, takes his medications, and gets his sleep and exercise. I see her bring joy into caregiving by initiating board games with my dad and working together on crossword puzzles. I know she's done everything she could this last year to keep both of them safe during the pandemic too. I honor my mom, Grace Kono, for the love and care she brings to my dad every day.

We love seeing how our friends at @cga_npc honored their incredible domestic worker members at their We Make History graduation this past weekend (Congratulations 🎉), and are grateful that they have shared with us these beautiful words from their members about how they #HonorDomesticWork 💜

From @cga_npc:
“We are so grateful for the beautiful gift from Hand in Hand that we will be distributing to our members. Care work continues to be undervalued and invisiblized, so every gesture that recognizes domestic workers is one in the long history fighting for their worth and dignity.”

We made history! Deep congratulations to the graduates of We Make History, a 17 workshop course on the history of domestic work, the systems of oppression that have shaped this sector, and the strategies that domestic workers have used to organize for racial, gender, and economic justice. We are inspired by their commitment and look forward to establishing this course as a core program of our political education work in 2022!

I’m so grateful for the love we receive! Our domestic workers are not considered employees but members of our family and home. I’m so happy how we all work together. And so excited to celebrate Leticia and Madison’s birthday both today. We love you both and so do Archie and Theo. I wish you could have all seen how this portrait came together - true love and admiration! 💛

P.S. November is National Family Caregivers Month and tonight is a full moon with my moon art showing up any minute. How fitting!

[Image description: Two women, one, a woman of color with hair pulled back, wearing a blue top with white collar, smiling widely, as she holds a young white child with blonde hair, wearing a gray and red long-sleeve shirt looking at the camera. She is standing next to a white woman with blonde hair, wearing a black top, holding another young white child with blonde hair, wearing a blue and white shirt, and holding a red and yellow toy truck. Furniture and a wall mirror in the background.]

Sharing the love @airyneffets has for Leticia and Madison, and their #Interdependence:

Keith Gurgui and Family honor Rosita Villa:

For her hard work, reliability, and patience for many years (going on 12). By helping me (turning, bathing, dressing, feeding, etc.) she increases my independence and helps me live a more dignified life. I've been able to work and contribute. Personal care is an essential part of my life.

Julia Solow and Family honor Jackie Newton:

Jackie provided child care for us and made a lasting impression on us all with her positive, loving and caring attitude. She is a genuinely amazing human being and we were so fortunate to have her in our family's life. Even now, more than 30 years later, we are still in touch with her. Thank you forever, Jackie!
