This is not a Mother’s Day or birthday post. It is a post to #honordomesticwork—which includes my mama, and probably yours. I don’t have the energy to break down all the ways that caregiving is gendered, within the family, immediate and extended—but I’m pretty sure you know (or are) a mother who carries more than her share of the weight. This woman and I not only care for her mom together, but we have raised my child together. I don’t know how I would have survived single motherhood if she was not so loving and generous with Raider. Any travel I’ve done in the last 11 years was made possible cuz of her care. My family, like many, is matriarchal—and the torch has been passed from my grandma to my mama. My aunt is mentally disabled, and was under grandma’s financial, logistical, and financial care until grandma could no longer take care of even herself. So for over a decade my mom has completely taken over as caregiver of her sister, especially in the last year since my uncle died. Between the two of us—we juggle the care for grandma, Raider, my aunt (also named Melinda!, and our entire family unit. I got my selfless caregiving gene from her, for better or worse, (still trying to figure out how primary caregivers are supposed to have “boundaries”🤔).

All families, and mothers, don’t center care as much as mine. But I hope, if you’re gathering with loved ones, you can take a minute to say thank you to the caregivers that hold your family together. There is a lot of invisible work that goes unseen but is literally keeping people safe, loved, and alive. Domestic work is paid and unpaid, and it includes family caregivers like me and my mama who do what we do, cuz somebody has to.

Tag and thank a mama, grandma, parent, or caregiver in your life who carries a heavy load. And if you share at www.HonorDomesticWork.com, you can have this beautiful poster by micahbazant, sent to them as gift of appreciation. Saying thanks goes a long way, (and not just on this “holiday” that you already know my views on 🙅‍♀️.) #DearMama #YouAreAppreciated

“I am deeply thankful for my dad, a Black immigrant engineer from Peru who moved to the United States to provide me with opportunities he never had available to him. For years he has tended to me, even bringing me homemade lunch daily through the pandemic, because I have Lupus and other chronic illnesses that cause fatigue and pain.” – Veralucia Mendoza from Sylvania, OH

November is #NationalFamilyCaregiversMonth which recognizes over 65.7 million people who assist a loved one with personal care, skilled nursing tasks, and care management sometimes around the clock.

Family Caregivers are partners, spouses, grandparents, parents, and children of all ages who provide support to a loved one with essential daily tasks. Twenty-four percent of them report caring for more than one person. Some adult children are balancing care for their own children and parents – what is often called “sandwich” caregiving.

As our aging population increases, the struggles of family caregivers are becoming more and more apparent. Hand in Hand collected some of their stories during the 2022 midterm elections and through our ongoing #HonorDomesticWork project. Read them all in our latest blog via LINK IN BIO 🔗

HONOR DOMESTIC WORK hihdomesticemployers MELINDA ALEXANDER mumumansion “I deeply appreciate you!” For ten years you have lived with my mother Melinda, your grandmother. You grew up with her devotion to you, with her modeling for me and for you what lifetime caregiving looks like. As you became a teen she set out to show you that life is adventure, taking you as companion—from Mexico to Norway. When Mom began to need help, you were there for her and, as time passed, you became her primary family caregiver. While Lupe took the day shift as paid caregiver (see tribute to her on mumumansion), you have been there from 6pm to 11am—out of love and generosity of spirit. As your grandmother is living her 100th year, everyday you bring her love and light.
Together, we both work with Hand in Hand hihdomesticemployers and cadomesticworkers—striving to raise awareness that everyone’s home is also a workplace, for family caregivers and paid domestic workers alike. As you have cared for your grandmother, you have joined the international women’s movement to make the invisible labor of the home visible and to fight for equity and dignity for domestic workers. My tribute to Lupe and your tribute to me, and many others stories about life in the struggle to care for loved ones while fighting for government-funded Longterm services and supports, are on the website: www://honordomesticwork.com domesticworkers caringacrossgen #dignityhealth #honordomesticwork

Yesterday hihdomesticemployers launched #HonorDomesticWork and I’m moved to honor my mother, levasiaidereh 💕

My mom worked as a house cleaner when we first arrived to the U.S. in the late 80s. As undocumented immigrants who did not speak English, this was the only work she could find. She cleaned houses during the day, and at night we all (my two siblings, dad and me) helped clean offices. After a very difficult battle with cancer 4 years into our time here, she gave the work up because it would have been too strenuous of work to return to. Shortly after her recovery, my grandmother - her mother - was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, and my mother became her caretaker. Caring for her even while she continued to work during the day.

Her care continued after the death of my grandmother in a multitude of ways. From caring for aging friends to welcoming into our home friends and family, who like us, chose to leave their lives in Peru behind in search of more economic and physical security in the U.S. Eventually, working in two residential living facilities for the aging, before dropping everything to come to NYC and help with childcare for my little one so that I could finish my Masters program, and now as I am back to working full-time.

I have learned immensely about care (and love) from her, both from her work as a former domestic worker and as a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother and care giver.

I deeply appreciate the care and love she pours into the kiddo, into all of us.

You too can honor a paid or unpaid care giver in your life by visiting: www.honordomesticwork.com and sharing your story. You’ll receive this beautiful poster (pic of it in slide 2) by Bay Area artist micahbazant for FREE (I gifted it to my mama). Join me in participating in this beautiful and inspiring project. ❤️

The Mazur and Feldstein Families honor Tina Tsentumbwe for her home care work. “After close to a year of taking full-time care of my Mother-in-Law Barbara, who had been ill for a long while, Barbara passed away at her home. On that same day, in honor of Barbara’s passing, Tina invited her family over to be with us and to sing and pray in her first language for our family. While most in my family are not observant/religious, the prayers and songs were deeply moving and gave us all tremendous comfort. In addition to giving Barbara superhuman care during the last difficult year of her life, for all of us, - parents, children and grandchildren - Tina modeled what it means to be a caring, thoughtful and courageous woman. Any obstacles we face in our lives pale in comparison to the obstacles that Tina has faced in moving to the U.S. and becoming a CNA and a citizen. Her loyalty, commitment to her patients and to her work, combined with her never-ending thoughtfulness, are just a few aspects of Tina that make her so deserving of this honor.” — Amy Mazur

And if you share at www.HonorDomesticWork.com, you can have this beautiful poster by @micahbazant, sent to them as gift of appreciation. Saying thanks goes a long way, (and not just on this “holiday” that you already know my views on 🙅‍♀️.) #DearMama #YouAreAppreciated

Rachel McCullough honors Andrea Richards for the home care support she provided her grandma. “I remember Andrea taking my grandma out to get her nails and hair done, always making time and space for beauty! I also remember how Andrea loved to learn Yiddish words and phrases from my grandma, and how they'd drink Manischewitz wine together at every opportunity. Andrea provided so many years of dedicated and compassionate care for my grandma Ruth. My grandma never would have been able to live with such dignity and independence in the final years of her life were it not for Andrea's work. My whole family will always be grateful to Andrea for her love, care, and work. My grandma was so lucky to have such a supportive and loving caregiver in the final years of her life, and a true friend, as well.”
