#MothersDay may be over, but the work of mothering, the care and domestic work, performed by so many that makes all other work possible happens every day behind closed doors in our homes and communities. Employers want to ensure their homes are health and safe workplaces. Join us in urging @cagovernor @gavinnewsom to support #SB686 and extend health and safety protections to CA domestic workers.

More from our Executive Director, Stacy Kono in her tribute to her own mother, and all domestic and care workers:

Thinking about what @angelagarbes says about "mothering" on Mother's Day - how it is "some of the only truly essential work that humans do," yet it is invisible and devalued.

So in addition to honoring my mom Grace Kono for raising me and my sisters to be proud of who we are, to always show gratitude and bring creativity and generosity to all we do, I honor all the care and domestic workers who "mother" our communities and deserve to be recognized for the fundamental role they play in creating a just and caring society for everyone.

With that in mind, I hope you join me today in taking action to urge @gavinnewsom to support #SB686 to extend health and safety to California's nannies, house cleaners and home care workers.

We're moving into Week 2 of our Spring #MembershipDrive with a care story from Lois Volta, Hand in Hand member and member of our Agency Council:

"I started my career as a domestic worker, so I know first hand what it feels like to be undervalued. Our society doesn’t yet see domestic and care work as the essential and sacred work it is, something I write about in my new book, Confessions of a Cleaning Lady.

In the earlier stages of my career working as a house cleaner, I often devalued my own work because I felt invisible. Through getting involved with Hand in Hand, I have felt more of my worth and honor my experiences in this field as highly valuable. Hand in Hand validated my voice by giving me a seat at the table as a representative to the Philadelphia Domestic Workers Task Force.

Now that I am an employer, I take pride in having a business that employs domestic workers who are tangibly improving home environments throughout Philadelphia. As an employer, I know that the health and growth of my business – and the home environments of the clients we serve – is completely dependent on ensuring the domestic workers on our team are paid fair wages and have dignity and respect on the job."

“I am deeply thankful for my dad, a Black immigrant engineer from Peru who moved to the United States to provide me with opportunities he never had available to him. For years he has tended to me, even bringing me homemade lunch daily through the pandemic, because I have Lupus and other chronic illnesses that cause fatigue and pain.” – Veralucia Mendoza from Sylvania, OH

November is #NationalFamilyCaregiversMonth which recognizes over 65.7 million people who assist a loved one with personal care, skilled nursing tasks, and care management sometimes around the clock.

Family Caregivers are partners, spouses, grandparents, parents, and children of all ages who provide support to a loved one with essential daily tasks. Twenty-four percent of them report caring for more than one person. Some adult children are balancing care for their own children and parents – what is often called “sandwich” caregiving.

As our aging population increases, the struggles of family caregivers are becoming more and more apparent. Hand in Hand collected some of their stories during the 2022 midterm elections and through our ongoing #HonorDomesticWork project. Read them all in our latest blog via LINK IN BIO 🔗

"Keara lived with our family during summer vacations and took care of me from ages 6-12. She was like the super cool older sister or cousin that I never had. She was incredibly vivacious and outgoing, and could be an antidote to my anxious and reserved personality. We were part of a beach community that held a dance every Labor Day. She knew all the current dance moves, and would make up funny dances to do with us. Some of my favorite memories with her are the times we got to spend one-on-one, the times I'd get to stay over at her apartment and hang out with her and her friends. Just hanging out with her made me feel special, like I was getting a window into an exciting adult world. She gave me and my family so much." - Susan Barbash, Eric, Ani and Jonah Katz

Shining our #WomensHistoryMonth spotlight on Elizabeth Gonzalez for her immense support to Emma Katz as a nanny for her children:

"Liz looked after my children from when my firstborn Max was 5 months old. When I was a struggling new mom, she gave me tips and guidance and essential breaks. As a new parent, it was a relief to see how happy and cared for my kids were with her, and I deeply appreciated her experience and wisdom. She was able to ease my worries and anxieties about all the little things like— Was the baby learning enough words? Why wasn't he napping? Would he be okay the first time I left him for a weekend trip? Liz gave me advice, calmed me down, and was there for my family whenever we needed her. It was so important to have that support during that time and I am forever grateful.”

I also remember how Andrea loved to learn Yiddish words and phrases from my grandma, and how they'd drink Manischewitz wine together at every opportunity. Andrea provided so many years of dedicated and compassionate care for my grandma Ruth. My grandma never would have been able to live with such dignity and independence in the final years of her life were it not for Andrea's work. On this #IWD2022 we celebrate and fight alongside the incredible domestic workers, predominately women of color and immigrants, who like Maria Morales, care for our homes and loved ones: helping us to breathe a little easier:

"I am honoring Maria Morales, a domestic worker who I employed during a difficult time in my life. In my mid 30s I got very sick for two years. During that time I did not have the physical energy to clean my home. I was extremely grateful to get to employ Maria, who in addition to being a highly skilled house cleaner, is a powerful organizer and leader (now the Board President) with @mujeresunidasyactivas in Oakland CA. During those years, Maria cleaned my apartment, washed my dishes, and walked up and down five flights of stairs to do my laundry which was on the roof of my building. On a day when Maria cleaned, my home would become in order and sparkly clean. It made me feel like I could breathe easy. By taking care of my home, Maria took care of me in a time when I really needed it. I deeply appreciated her labor and care. I was also grateful that through that experience I had the chance to build a relationship with Maria and share life moments with one another. I grew to care about her very much." - Danielle Feris

Hannah Guilford honors the families, friends and neighbors in her community for the care they provide by filling the #Childcare gaps:

I work in childcare access and want to honor all of the family members, friends, and neighbors in my small, rural community that fill the gaps in our childcare system that is failing both caretakers and families. They devote the finite resources of their time and their energy to care for other children on top (and sometimes at the expense) of caring for their own. The economy of our community could not exist without their work, but they are often made invisible by their class, race, ethnicity, and language. Our community relies on them, and I thank them for the sacrifices they make to do this work.

Cecelie Counts honors Cheri Hampton for the care giving she provided her mother in her final years:

I am honoring Cheri Hampton, who was the lead caregiver for our mother during the final years she suffered from Lewy-body dementia. She was so important that our mother called her "Aunt Sadie" because she thought Cheri was our grandfather's sister.

Elizabeth Gilmore and family honor Raili Artale for her many years of care, kindness and generous spirit:

Raili Artale started helping our family in 1982. My husband had just been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and our two children were an infant and a three year old. From the beginning, Raili did so many things, always cheerfully willing to do whatever was needed to help keep the house running - from cleaning and cooking to picking up the children and running errands. She made it possible for me to parent and manage a whole new set of responsibilities. Over the years her time with us waxed and waned as our needs and hers shifted. When my second husband got terminal cancer and was also partially paralized, her work shifted again and she was a core member of his care team. Decades of friends and family have grown fond of Raili, and her annual Finnish gingerbread house is legendary. After over 40 years with our family, we are so glad to honor her work and her incredibly kind and generous spirit.

Evan Schultz honors Iowa Home Care:

I experienced a spinal cord injury the summer of 2016. After returning home to Des Moines in November 2016 I began to receive services from the awesome Iowa Home Care.

I am writing this because I want to share how incredible and valuable the assistance from Home Nurse Aides have been.In the mornings I am assisted with using the restroom, showering, stretching, getting dressed, preparing meals, opening mail, keeping my home nice and tidy, and so much more. Without these amazing individuals' help I would not have quality-of-life, period.I would not be able to participate in physical therapy, volunteering, or accessing other involvement in the community during the day.I cannot imagine how difficult and challenging the position of Home Nurse Aide is. These wonderful individuals travel with their own vehicles all around at difficult hours to assist so many people in living as normal and productive as they can be. I do not feel that these individuals can ever receive enough acknowledgement and compensation for their efforts. There is no part of my day that I am able to enjoy that I do not have my Nurse Aides to thank for. I do not overlook that these professionals each have their own life, families, and struggles to deal with on top of what must be at times a very stressful and overwhelming occupation.

I cannot imagine my life without their help each and every day.I also have help at nighttime getting into bed and having help positioning my body so I'm able to sleep comfortably without worrying about bedsores and other issues. I cannot say enough about how grateful I am for each of their help in how much they mean to me. Thanks again to Iowa Home Care. Lastly, thanks for each individual that took time to read this, thanks to each individual family or friend who supports individuals in need and healthcare professionals of all kinds.

Neal Friedman honors Katie for the care she provided his sons :

I am honoring Katie, a woman who was our nanny for almost 15 years. I am not sure how we would have survived without Katie. She was totally reliable and we never worried for a second about the health and safety of our boys when she took care of them. She went onto a successful career in social work and has remained a close friend of ours and continues to see the boys (now men) often.
